Parenting a teenager can sometimes feel like standing in the middle of a storm. One moment they are confident, the next they are uncertain. This is not failure. It is growth. The teenage brain is still developing, with roots stretching and branches reaching toward adulthood.

What is really changing

  • The parts of the brain that help with decision making and self-control (like an internal gardener planting structure) are still under construction.

  • Systems driving emotion and reward are like vines spreading quickly, lush and intense, sometimes overwhelming. They demand attention and support.

  • Teens are wired for “now” more than “later”. That is normal. Their brains prioritise immediate feedback and belonging over distant rewards.

  • At the same time, their capacity for learning, reflection, creativity and identity formation is peaking. The soil is rich, full of possibilities.

How can you support the growth?

  1. Hold space for conversation and presence
Not just talking, but listening. Asking questions and being curious. Let your teen feel seen and heard without triggering defensiveness.

  2. Set boundaries with empathy
Rules are not enemies; they are fences that guide growth. When you explain why they matter, it builds trust, not rebellion.

  3. Encourage autonomy and co-creation
Invite your teen into decisions: what is dinner, what is curfew, what is the study plan. Let them own parts of the garden.

  4. Shared nature, rhythm and rest
Just as a garden needs cycles of sunlight, rest and rain, so do teens and families. Walking, spending time outdoors, regular rest, and offline time all contribute to resilience.

  5. Parent well-being matters
Your soil needs to be rich, too. Practising self-compassion, seeking support and staying grounded helps you stay present even when the rollercoaster feels steep.

A final encouragement

There will be moments of chaos: mood swings, impulsive choices, the familiar cry of “What were they thinking?!” But even in the mess, gardens grow deeper roots.

At Rowe & Associates, now part of the Malu Health network, we walk with you in this. With patience, connection and the courage to hold both growth and challenge, you help your teen move toward their fullest self.
